  CERAMIC BELLS / ASSEMBLIES

A mixture of Arizona Clay, commercial stoneware and water, combine to form a casting material known as slip. The slip is poured into silt and plaster bell molds. The water absorbing properties of the mold material results in developing a solidified layer of clay slip that is in contact with the molds. Once the layer adequately thickens, excess slip fluid is drawn out the bell. The then hollow bell continues to dry and shrink until it is ready to by lifted out to of the mold. While in the mold, bells are upside down. Ceramic bell molds are prepped with a powdering of oxides that bond loosely to the bells providing variable pattern of coloration. Silt cast bells take on the textured characteristics of the silt  mold. Each bell bears a unique design hand carved by a skilled artisan while it is partially damp. Bells are allowed to dry completely before being fired in the kiln. After they are fired, the bells are ready for assembly.
